SFC met Vikings at Turf City on the final fixture before the holiday break on a warm Saturday afternoon. The break seemed to come faster for some than others as both teams were missing several players on the day. SFC got off to a flying start with a scrappy goal from Neil Shonard that bounced around the Vikings penalty area before Neil finally slammed it home. It was really a precursor to the rest of the match really as Vikings struggled to find their rhythm and were missing several attacking options that would have helped give them an edge on the day. Momentum found itself with SFC early on and stayed that way for the remainder of the match. We’ve all been under similar circumstances where it seems nothing is going our way and we end up on the losing side of a big scoreline. Rather than going through the goals, we want to highlight a few performances that bode well for the remainder of the season for SFC. Roberto put in a MoM performance at CB cleaning up anything and everything Vikings offered up. It was also a welcomed return for Akil who has returned from a long-term hamstring injury to partner with Roberto at CB. Also, a first start for young Alex Catanescu (age 18) who was rewarded for his consistency off as a substitute in recent matches continued his fine form and put in a mature performance. Joe Claridge put in another attacking masterclass with 3 goals and 2 assists (just wish he’d run a bit more). Neil Shonard provided a physical presence at striker in his first start of the season netting twice through some hard work and persistence. All in all a good performance to get back on track after our loss to Latini and end the first half of the season on a high note. Special shout out to Domino for nearly scoring the Cosmo League goal of the season after seeing the SFC GK Santino a bit too far off his line. His strike from 60 yards hit the crossbar saving Santi a few blushes.
